As a complement to our local visual aurora monitor, I tried to obtain information about the ionosphere over Växjö using GPS. I wanted something like the ionosphere monitor of Lantmäteriet.
The graph below shows the height as provided by a Glonass/GPS module, stationary on the window sill. The traces show the averages over 60 readings, on three consecutive days. The horizontal axis is UTC time. The datapoints were uploaded using the Plotly library for Arduino, and then manipulated using Google spreadsheets.
These fluctuations are no indication of the state of the ionosphere. They are mostly caused by reflections off buildings, as they tend to occur again 24 hours later, when the GPS satellites are in the same positions in the sky.
